Announcement on establishment of
JSPCR: committee of Vitiligo Research

Vitiligo, the most common hypopigmentary disorder, is an acquired disease characterized by progressive loss of melanocytes. Vitiligo occurs worldwide with an estimated prevalence of 0.5-1% in most populations. In Japan, vitiligo was reported to account for approximately 60% of all depigmented disorders, and 18th most prevalent disorder in the dermatological field in Japan. However, the treatment of vitiligo with evidence-based evaluation has not been established.

In the situation above, Prof. Alain Taieb (Bordeaux University) and Prof. Mauro Picardo (San Gallicano Dermatology Institute) established the Vitiligo Global Issues Consensus Conference (VGICC) in 2010, and a lot of scientists who were interested in vitiligo worldwide joined the Conference and have exchanged opinions to the present in order to make broad international consensus for the goal of guiding both clinical research and optimal patient management. Then, we establish the committee of Vitiligo Research Group as a branch of Japan Society of Pigment Cell Research (JSPCR) to make and keep the relationship between the international group and foreign societies of vitiligo, and also, to give good opportunities for constructive discussion among domestic researches of vitiligo.
